Amitabh Bachchan inaugurates Dilip De’s second one man art exhibit, ‘Celebrations of the Unexpected,’ at Jehangir Art Gallery
Art has never looked as good as it did on Friday
evening as one of the most celebrated artist, art curator and
entrepreneur of the industry, Dilip De hosted his second art exhibition
titled "Celebration of the Unexpected". Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, who has
known Mr. De for several years, inaugurated the event.
As
an artist Dilip De uses a stylus and a smart phone to create art. He is
recognized as the first artist to produce paintings with a smartphone.
“Celebrations
of the unexpected” is about the achievements of the people and friends
who the artist has known for years. He showcased
a new body of artwork and a few “Only One Edition” paintings.
There will be no second print! These works were auctioned during the
event and proceeds of sale were given Jehangir Art Gallery, iconic Art
Centre, for its contribution to promote Indian Art
and modernization of gallery space.
Also
present at the event was the De family comprising of wife Shobhaa De
and children Anandita De, Arundhati De, Avantika Kilachand, Ranadip De
and Aditya Kilachand
and grandchildren. Mr Adi Jehangir, owner of Jehangir Art Gallery was
all smiles throughout the evening. Celebrities and known faces present
were Jaya Bachchan, Suhel Seth,
Police Commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar with wife Aditee, Rakhee Kapoor, Simone Singh, Pratima and Gaurav
Bhatia and many more.
Mr
Amitabh Bachchan, who inaugurated the show, stated that, “When Dilip
showed me his artwork and his new passion, I initially thought he was
joking but then he sent
me some more painting images and I have to say this, I found it
extremely interesting, I have them up in the walls of my house and thank
you for inviting me here today. Dilip is a dear old friend and we have
known each other for years. I have said this before
but Dilip was working in a building, he was working for a shipping
magnate, and I was this small freight broker asking for freight and he
was this corporate looking guy with files and we used to be in awe of
this gentlemen because he was so good with his work
and always very official looking as a corporate head. Then we got to
know that he has gotten married to the wonderful Shobhaa De.
I came to know about his art when I visited his home, I was not
invited but I invited myself. I came to meet Shobhaa De as she was not
kind to me in one of her columns, it was also a time that I was being
greatly criticized for many things that I was
not involved in. However, when I went to their home, I truly realized
how passionate he is about art and their home had some of the finest
pieces that I had ever seen. To create something out of a mobile phone
is really quite unique. I think it is very inspiring
for the younger generation and I had not even realized that this could
be done on an phone, it is almost like oil paintings and to be able to
create that is amazing, it is very progressive, it is very modern and
with the times. Dilip I am very thankful to
you and also very proud of you. I also thank Nitin (the man who bought
Mr Bachchan’s portrait for 10 Lakhs) for buying my portrait. Let us all
celebrate the talent and appreciate the caliber of this artwork that
this very fine gentleman at this age has created
on a mobile phone.”
Dilip De who learned to enjoy and appreciate art, beauty, nature and colours from
an early age, surely pulled in a great crowd to celebrate the show.
The
USP of the show lies in ‘The Smartphone School of Painting,’ and Mr. De
has secured copyrights registrations of his paintings in this “new
school of
art” from the Union Commerce and Industry Ministry. The paintings will
be on display at Jehangir Art Gallery till 3rd February, 2018.
